Well, the holidays have passed, New Year’s resolutions have probably
already been made and broken, but the spirits of our Hobbit children are as
jovial and exuberant as ever. As we
watched for the groundhog to give us his opinion of the weather, several of
the preschoolers made their own predictions about his decision. The debate and discussions about this
miniscule forecaster was a sight to behold as were the illustrations they
generated. It certainly caused this
seasoned teacher to stop and enjoy this small and seemingly inconsequential
happening. I was moved, not only by
the innate curiosity demonstrated by the children, but the collaboration
between ages and abilities and the sharing of this with their teachers who
beautifully facilitated this lesson. I
bring this up simply because the learning and discovery being so thoroughly
enjoyed here sometimes goes unnoticed if not followed by a “ditto” sheet of work. We are such a paper driven society that
assessment of learning must be demonstrated by concrete methods. As spring approaches, the goal of all of
our classes, especially preschool, is to cover all the senses with
learning. Most of the older children
already have true command of paper work, so we’ll be stretching their comfort
levels by challenging other areas of the brain…manipulatives and project
approach learning. Watch for photos,
graphs, child-dictated stories and more!
The creativity will be amazing and we will have our own art show at
the end of the spring (all classes included!) So, I guess my message is that
the children here have mastered the “norm” paper work! We’re off to explore a more exciting world
and hope you will enjoy seeing us soar! Shannon |
